Known JLR Fault
Range Rover Transfer Case Oil Service — Why It Matters
Affects
Overview
Transfer case oil degradation is one of the most overlooked service items on the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The transfer case routes drive to front and rear axles and contains a viscous coupling or centre differential — both of which rely on correct oil specification and level. Extended service intervals or using the wrong oil type leads to premature wear and AWD system faults.
Symptoms
- ▶AWD fault warning light — transfer case unable to engage correctly
- ▶Vibration or shudder through the drivetrain
- ▶Difficulty selecting 4x4 Low range
- ▶Transfer case making whining or grinding noise under load
- ▶Diff lock not engaging on vehicles so equipped
- ▶Increased fuel consumption from drivetrain drag
What Causes It?
- ✕Transfer case oil never changed — a common oversight on dealer-serviced vehicles
- ✕Incorrect oil specification used at a previous service
- ✕Transfer case oil contaminated with water — from wading without service afterwards
- ✕Overfilling or underfilling the transfer case — both cause damage
The Solution
JLRMAN carries out a transfer case oil drain and refill using the correct JLR-specified fluid for the vehicle's transfer case type. We also inspect the transfer case for any signs of bearing wear or seal failure. On vehicles used for wading or heavy towing, we recommend more frequent transfer case services — every 30,000 miles rather than the standard 60,000.
How to Prevent It
Change transfer case oil every 30,000 miles on vehicles used for towing or wading — the standard 60,000-mile interval assumes light use and is frequently too long.
