Known JLR Fault
Range Rover Air Suspension Failure — Causes, Symptoms & Fix
Affects
Overview
Air suspension failure is one of the most common and costly faults on the Range Rover. The electronic air suspension (EAS) system controls ride height and comfort, but the compressor, air springs, and height sensors all have finite lifespans — and when they fail, the vehicle can drop to bump stops overnight.
Symptoms
- ▶Vehicle sitting noticeably lower at one or more corners
- ▶Air suspension warning light on dashboard
- ▶Vehicle dropping to minimum height overnight when parked
- ▶'Suspension fault — normal height only' message
- ▶Compressor running continuously or audibly straining
- ▶Uneven ride height between front and rear or side to side
What Causes It?
- ✕Air spring bladder rupture or perishing — very common on L322 from 80,000 miles
- ✕Air compressor motor failure from continuous running to compensate for leaks
- ✕Height sensor failure giving inaccurate ride height readings
- ✕Valve block solenoid failure preventing correct pressure distribution
- ✕Air line cracking or chafing against body or chassis
The Solution
JLRMAN performs a full EAS diagnostic using SDD software to identify which component has failed. We carry out a pressurised leak-down test to pinpoint air spring or line failures, and replace only the faulty components. Compressor replacement is combined with new air driers where required. All work is followed by full system reset and calibration.
How to Prevent It
Replace air springs in axle pairs once either corner shows signs of failure — replacing one corner now costs less than the emergency callout when the second fails shortly after.
