Overview
The BMW-sourced 4.4 TDV8 engine in the Range Rover L322 is prone to oil cooler blockage — a fault that causes the engine to overheat and, if left unaddressed, can result in catastrophic engine damage. The oil cooler becomes blocked with emulsified oil or debris, preventing it from regulating oil temperature effectively.
Symptoms

The Solution
JLRMAN diagnoses TDV8 oil cooler condition through oil and coolant sampling, pressure testing, and thermal imaging. Oil cooler flushing or replacement is carried out, combined with a full coolant system flush. We check for head gasket integrity where coolant contamination is found. A full oil service is included as part of any oil cooler repair.
How to Prevent It
Regular oil changes with the correct BMW-specification oil prevent sludge build-up in the TDV8 — the oil cooler blockage is almost always a consequence of neglected servicing.
