Range Rover Evoque (L538) PowerShift Gearbox — Judder & Shudder Fix
Affects
Overview
The 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox fitted to early Range Rover Evoque models (2011–2018) is one of the most problematic components on the car. Judder, shudder, and hesitation — particularly at low speeds and when pulling away — are extremely common and well-documented. The gearbox was manufactured by Getrag and shares its fundamental design flaw with other Ford-group vehicles of the period.
Symptoms
- ▶Judder or shudder when pulling away from rest — especially below 10mph
- ▶Hesitation or lurching when changing between 1st and 2nd gear
- ▶Gearbox warning light illuminated
- ▶Clutch pack overheating in stop-start traffic
- ▶Gearbox going into 'limp mode' — reduced power and fixed gear
- ▶Vibration through the drivetrain at low speed on inclines
What Causes It?
- ✕Dual-clutch pack wear — fundamental design susceptibility at low speeds
- ✕Transmission control module (TCM) software not updated
- ✕Clutch pack contamination from degraded transmission fluid
- ✕Mechatronic unit failure within the gearbox
The Solution
JLRMAN diagnoses PowerShift faults using SDD to check for TCM updates and stored fault codes. In many cases, a transmission fluid change combined with a TCM software update resolves or significantly reduces the judder. Where the clutch packs are worn beyond recovery, a gearbox replacement or rebuild is required. We advise honestly on the most cost-effective solution for your vehicle.
How to Prevent It
Ensure TCM software is current — JLR released updates addressing PowerShift judder. A transmission fluid change alongside the update is the most cost-effective first step.
