Land Rover Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 Timing Chain — Symptoms & Fix

Overview

Timing chain stretch on the 3.0 TDV6 and SDV6 engines fitted to the Discovery 4 is a serious and well-documented fault. The bi-turbo diesel engines use a complex timing chain arrangement at the rear of the engine — making replacement a significant workshop operation. Early diagnosis is critical: a failed timing chain can destroy the engine.

Symptoms

• ▶Rattle from the rear of the engine on cold start — the classic timing chain signature
• ▶Timing chain fault codes stored in the ECU (P0016, P0017, etc.)
• ▶Engine management warning light
• ▶Rough running and poor performance from incorrect valve timing
• ▶Increased smoke from exhaust on start-up

What Causes It?
