Known JLR Fault
Land Rover Discovery 3 EAS Air Suspension Fault — Diagnosis & Fix
Affects
Overview
The Discovery 3 uses Land Rover's Electronic Air Suspension (EAS) system, which provides excellent ride comfort and off-road ground clearance — but is also one of the most common fault areas on ageing Discovery 3 examples. Air spring failure, compressor wear, and height sensor faults are all well-documented problems that JLRMAN sees regularly.
Symptoms
- ▶Vehicle sitting low — one or more corners at minimum height
- ▶Air suspension warning light on dashboard
- ▶Compressor running continuously or making straining noise
- ▶'Vehicle too low — drive slowly' or similar dashboard message
- ▶Vehicle dropping to bump stops overnight
- ▶Off-road height modes unavailable
What Causes It?
- ✕Air spring bladder failure — perishing on older Discovery 3 examples is very common
- ✕Air compressor failure from overuse compensating for leaking springs
- ✕Height sensor linkage failure giving incorrect height data
- ✕Air valve block solenoid failure
- ✕Air line chafing or cracking
The Solution
JLRMAN diagnoses Discovery 3 EAS faults using SDD, combined with a pressurised leak-down test to identify which air spring or component is at fault. We replace air springs, compressors, height sensors, and valve blocks as required, and recalibrate the EAS system on completion. We advise on replacing springs in axle pairs where multiple springs are aged rather than replacing just the failed unit.
How to Prevent It
Replace air springs in axle pairs rather than individually — on an aged Discovery 3, a single failed spring is usually a sign that the partner spring will fail shortly after.
