Overview
The Jaguar XJ uses an air suspension system for its signature ride quality. Both the X350 and X351 generations are prone to air suspension faults as the system ages — the compressor, air springs, and height sensors all become failure points after 60,000–80,000 miles. Suspension warning lights and the car sitting unevenly are common first signs.
Symptoms
- ▶Air suspension warning light on dashboard
- ▶Vehicle sitting lower than normal — especially one corner
- ▶Audible compressor running continuously
- ▶'Suspension fault' message in the driver information panel
- ▶Vehicle dropping overnight when parked
- ▶Harsh ride from suspension locked at minimum height
What Causes It?
- ✕Air spring bladder perishing or splitting — very common on X350 and older X351
- ✕Compressor failure from overwork compensating for leaking air springs
- ✕Height sensor linkage failure giving incorrect ride height readings
- ✕Valve block solenoid failure preventing correct air distribution
The Solution
JLRMAN uses JLR SDD software to diagnose XJ air suspension faults, identifying the specific component causing the issue. We perform a pressurised leak-down test to pinpoint air spring failures and check compressor output pressure. Failed components are replaced and the system calibrated. We advise against 'one corner' fixes where multiple springs are aged — replacement in axle pairs is best practice.
How to Prevent It
Replace air springs in axle pairs rather than individually — when one spring fails on an aged XJ, its partner is usually close behind.
