Known JLR Fault
Jaguar E-Pace 9-Speed Gearbox Judder & Hesitation — Fix
Affects
Overview
The 9-speed automatic gearbox in the Jaguar E-Pace is a known weak point — particularly in early production vehicles. Low-speed judder, hesitation when pulling away, and rough gear changes between 1st and 2nd gear are widely reported. The fault is a combination of mechatronic calibration issues and transmission control module software that was updated by JLR in later software revisions.
Symptoms
- ▶Judder or shudder when pulling away from rest
- ▶Hesitation between 1st and 2nd gear under light throttle
- ▶Gearbox warning light — particularly in cold weather
- ▶Rough or clunky downshifts at low speed
- ▶Transmission going into limp mode
- ▶Vibration through the drivetrain during low-speed manoeuvring
What Causes It?
- ✕TCM software out of date — early production vehicles need update
- ✕Transmission fluid degraded or at incorrect level
- ✕Mechatronic unit calibration drift from thermal cycling
- ✕Torque converter shudder from fluid contamination
The Solution
JLRMAN diagnoses E-Pace gearbox faults using SDD, checking TCM software version and applying any available updates. A transmission fluid service is carried out alongside the software update. Where the judder persists after software and fluid service, a mechatronic unit replacement or gearbox rebuild is assessed. We provide an honest assessment of the most cost-effective solution.
How to Prevent It
Check TCM software version at every service — JLR has released multiple updates addressing E-Pace gearbox judder and many owners are unaware their vehicle needs an update.
