Known JLR Fault
Discovery Sport Haldex AWD Failure — Causes, Symptoms & Fix
Affects
Overview
The Land Rover Discovery Sport uses a Haldex rear differential coupling to provide all-wheel drive. The Haldex system requires regular oil changes — typically every 40,000 miles — but this is frequently missed at main dealer services. Neglecting the Haldex service leads to premature wear, clutch pack failure, and AWD system faults that can be expensive to rectify.
Symptoms
- ▶AWD fault warning on dashboard
- ▶Rear wheels not engaging in slippery conditions
- ▶Vibration or shudder through the drivetrain
- ▶Burning smell from rear differential area
- ▶Haldex fault codes stored in the TCM
- ▶Reduced traction on wet or loose surfaces
What Causes It?
- ✕Haldex oil service omitted — clutch packs running in degraded fluid
- ✕Haldex pump failure from contaminated or depleted oil
- ✕Haldex filter blockage restricting oil flow to the clutch pack
- ✕Clutch pack wear beyond the point of fluid change recovery
The Solution
JLRMAN diagnoses Haldex condition using SDD and a physical inspection of the unit. We carry out a Haldex oil and filter service as a first step. If the pump or clutch pack is damaged, we advise on repair or replacement options. Regular Haldex servicing every 40,000 miles is the best preventative measure — we can add this to your service schedule.
How to Prevent It
Service the Haldex oil and filter every 40,000 miles — this inexpensive service is frequently missed at main dealers and its omission is the number-one cause of AWD failure.
