Known JLR Fault
Range Rover Evoque Gearbox Problems — Powershift Judder & Fixes
Affects
Overview
The early Range Rover Evoque (L538) was fitted with a 6-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic gearbox that developed a notorious judder and hesitation issue — particularly at low speeds when pulling away. This was the subject of a JLR technical service bulletin and, in many cases, was addressed under warranty on younger vehicles. However, older examples are now out of warranty and the issue persists.
Symptoms
- ▶Shuddering or vibrating when pulling away from rest
- ▶Hesitation before drive engages — particularly in traffic
- ▶Clunking noise from gearbox during low-speed manoeuvres
- ▶Gearbox fault warning on dashboard
- ▶Difficulty selecting Drive or Reverse — particularly when cold
What Causes It?
- ✕PowerShift dual-clutch contaminated with water — particularly in wet conditions
- ✕Clutch pack wear from slip during low-speed manoeuvres
- ✕Transmission fluid degradation — PowerShift fluid is sensitive to condition
- ✕Software calibration issue in early production gearbox control units
The Solution
JLRMAN diagnoses PowerShift faults on early Evoque models and carries out transmission fluid replacement using the correct specification. In more severe cases, clutch pack replacement or gearbox replacement may be required. We carry out an honest assessment and won't recommend expensive repairs where a fluid service and software update will resolve the issue.
