Known JLR Fault
Range Rover DPF Problems — Causes, Symptoms & Solutions
Affects
Overview
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) problems are one of the most common issues affecting JLR diesel vehicles in Shropshire — a county where shorter rural journeys are common and vehicles rarely reach motorway temperatures. A DPF that can't complete its active regeneration cycle will block progressively until it causes reduced performance, warning lights, and eventually a DPF replacement requirement.
Symptoms
- ▶DPF warning light (often an orange symbol) on dashboard
- ▶'DPF Full — Drive at speed to regenerate' message
- ▶Noticeable loss of power, particularly above 3,000 rpm
- ▶Increased fuel consumption
- ▶Strong smell from the exhaust — particularly after a failed regeneration attempt
- ▶Engine entering limp mode on severely blocked DPFs
What Causes It?
- ✕Short-journey driving preventing the exhaust reaching regeneration temperature
- ✕EGR valve faults preventing correct fuel-air ratio for regeneration
- ✕Faulty DPF pressure sensor giving incorrect readings
- ✕Oil dilution — fuel getting into the engine oil from failed regenerations
- ✕Additive (EOLYS fluid) running low on older diesel models
The Solution
JLRMAN carries out forced DPF regeneration using JLR's SDD diagnostic software — a process that actively manages the engine's fuelling, exhaust temperature, and regeneration cycle. Where the DPF is beyond recovery by regeneration, we offer professional ultrasonic cleaning as a cost-effective alternative to replacement. Only in the most severe cases of physical damage or heavy ash loading is replacement necessary.
